    Bullseye webbingade of 100% cotton, this custom woven tape comes in at a true 1". 5-row herringbone pattern webbing is found on the corrugated canteens, which according to EJ Coates article, The Civil War Issue Canteens, Patterns of 1858 and 1862, which was published in the Joural of the Company of Military Historians.
    Quoting a letter written by Crosman

    "..a major change occurred. On 1 August 1862 the Military Storekeeper at the depot sent a letter to Colonel George H. Crosman, in command of the entire Philadelphia operation. In the letter he suggested the use of one inch wide cotton webbing for canteen straps, and enclosed a sample which has remained with the letter.13 The sample is a herringbone twill weave web, nearly identical to "engineer tape" in use today, although a bit heavier. This type of web had been used prior to the War to tie the doors on Sibley tents."
