The Wide Awakes stand apart, if nothing more for the street level energy that they brought to the election. The young working class men among its members, seemed to draw the attention of young women, making it not only a social and political party, but also presented the prospect of romantic adventure.

As is well known, they Wide Awakes sported rubber capes, as opposed to woven capes, as they had "no nap".
