Valentine's Day in the 1850's and 1860's was a far bigger deal than one would have initially expected. It was a combination of religious, social and commercial exchange, which was, to the most part, carried forward to this day. The following excerpts from Harper's Weekly in 1858 clearly show a large amount of involvement by the general public.
